Artist’s Statement

My work explores ever-changing weather fronts and the moods they create. I’m captivated by Scotland’s atmospheric sky tones, dramatic light and cloud formations throughout the year; in particular, first sunlight pushing through the dreich and early stages of a sunset. My process involves observing a scene and the emotion it evokes. I take recce photographs on location that I use as prompts to recall information, then take time to filter the strongest, most impactful images and feelings that I paint straight onto canvas or linen in the studio. I don’t sketch, my first marks in acrylic remain as part of the finished painting.

Quotes and publications

Quote from the client who commissioned a painting of East Lothian:

“…It is simply perfect. Somehow you managed to put everything I love onto one canvas and the more I look at it the more I see. The colours, composition, the light - stunning!”

Quote from a client who commissioned a scene of Loch Ryan:

“... the thing I love is it looks different from every angle you look at it, you pick up different tones ... It's just like having another window, I feel like I could walk in to it. We absolutely love it thank you so much.”
